We American gamers miss out on a lot of great games from Japan for one reason or another. Back in the 8 bit and 16 bit years (late 80's to late 90's) of video gaming, the RPG & Strategy genre was seen as not as popular and more of a niche market to U.S. game companies. Because of this, there were some true gems of RPGs that we didn't see in the States until the 32 bit era, or not at all. (Final Fantasy V, Tales Of Phantasia, and Star Ocean to name a few). We were lucky, however, to get Warsong. Warsong is a Strategy RPG that was the first in a very popular series in Japan called Langrisser. There were several sequels over the years, but only the first game was ever localized for the U.S. In the game you play as Garret, and control armies to fight for the kingdom of Baltia. The gameplay is quite slow, and controlling many characters in battle may get confusing, but it is a lot easier to pick up than those Romance games by KOEI. You can also save anytime during gameplay, which is a nice feature because battles can be long. The graphics aren't anything to write home about, but they aren't bad, and the character's faces were done well in an anime style. Of course the main reason to play any RPG is the story, and Warsong's is very good. While Warsong has its flaws, it is overall a good game that Strategy RPG fans should not miss. Its just too bad that we didn't get the rest of the series over in the United States.Read full review
The Dalsis Empire has laid seige upon the Castle of Baltia to seize the legendary sword Warsong. In a desperate attempt, King Alfador sends his only son, Prince Garett, into the countryside, away from impending death. Now Garett must rally his allies from accross the kingdom, and lead their armies in a battle against the empire to retrieve the sacred sword. Time is runinng short..... you will command troops and choose your mission commanders. Unite with loyal allies and charge into campaigns that forge the destiny of a realm. Between you and the path to victory lie dangerous rogues, the steel of Dalsis, and a confrontation in the ultimate showdown against evil..
This game is a classic hit, unfortunately this is the only one of a long running series released outside of Japan. Its a turn based strategy RPG, gives you multiple choices on how you want your characters to be as you level and progress through the game adding to the replay value. Its a must have for any fan of the Warsong(Langrisser for the rest of the series) or Shining Force series.
I originally picked this up on a whim in a gamestop. Very surprise how good this game was and how much I have come back to play it over the years. Too bad sequels were not released in US.
A rare gem that any sega genesis owner should have in their collection.
